Why Does Nitrogen Fertiliser Matter to Agriculture and Food Security?
When we talk about food security, we often think about farmers, crops, weather and food prices. But there is another part of the story that is less visible — Agricultural Fertilisers.
One of the most important fertilisers in modern agriculture is Urea 46N.
Urea may look like a simple white granule, but its role extends far beyond the product itself. Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth, and nitrogen fertilisers help farmers provide crops with the nutrients they need to grow.
This is why I believe Urea 46N deserves to be looked at not simply as a commodity, but as part of the wider global food system.

Behind every bag, bulk shipment or commodity transaction is a much bigger question: how do we produce enough food for a growing and changing world?
This is where commodities become much more interesting to me.
When I work with Agricultural Fertilisers, I am not only looking at a product, a price or a shipment. I am looking at the connection between resources, agriculture, trade and food security.
And Urea 46N sits right in the middle of that connection.
What is Urea 46N?
Urea is a nitrogen fertiliser widely used in agriculture. The “46” in Urea 46N refers to its nitrogen content — approximately 46% nitrogen by weight.
Nitrogen is one of the key nutrients plants need for healthy growth. It plays an important role in the development of leaves, stems and overall plant growth.
This makes Urea particularly important to farmers because it provides a concentrated source of nitrogen that can be applied to agricultural land as part of a crop nutrition programme.
From a commodity perspective, the product may appear straightforward: a white granule that is produced, transported, stored and eventually applied to farmland.
But the journey behind that granule can be much more complicated.
It involves production, quality, supply availability, international logistics, documentation, pricing, payment structures, import requirements and, ultimately, the connection between a genuine seller and a genuine buyer.
That is where Urea moves from being simply a fertiliser to becoming a global commodity.
Why does nitrogen matter to agriculture?
Agriculture depends on several factors working together — land, water, climate, seeds, technology, farming practices and nutrients.
Nitrogen is one of those fundamental nutrients.
When crops have access to the nutrients they require, farmers can support healthy crop development and agricultural productivity. This makes fertiliser an important input into modern farming systems.
But fertiliser is only one part of the agricultural equation.
Farmers also face changing weather patterns, water availability, input costs, market prices and other challenges. The cost and availability of agricultural inputs can therefore influence the economics of farming.
This is why I find the relationship between commodities and agriculture so interesting.
A commodity that may seem distant from everyday life can ultimately have a connection with something as basic as the food on our tables.
What does fertiliser have to do with food security?
This is where the story becomes much bigger than Urea itself.
Food security is not simply about whether food exists. It is also connected to whether agricultural systems can continue producing food reliably and whether farmers have access to the inputs they need.
Fertilisers are one part of that system.
If farmers cannot access essential agricultural inputs when they need them, the consequences can extend beyond an individual farm or a single harvest. Supply constraints, higher input costs, logistics disruptions and changing market conditions can all create challenges for agricultural producers.
This is why fertiliser supply chains matter.
Urea 46N moves through an international network connecting producers, traders, distributors and agricultural markets. A shipment may begin thousands of kilometres away from the farm where the fertiliser is eventually used.
That distance is a reminder of how interconnected the global food system has become.
Food security is therefore also connected to supply security.
Why is Urea a strategic commodity?
This is one of the reasons I include Agricultural Fertilisers as one of the six categories within JCG's Strategic Commodity Portfolio.
For me, a strategic commodity is not simply a product with commercial demand.
It is a commodity that has a wider connection to how economies function, how industries operate or how essential systems are supported.
Urea fits into this thinking because agriculture is an essential part of every economy.
Its availability, affordability and supply chains can have implications far beyond the commodity transaction itself.
This is also why I believe commodity trading requires looking beyond the headline price.
A commercially attractive price does not automatically mean there is a genuine transaction.
The product needs to be real. The seller needs to be credible. The specifications need to be clear. Documentation needs to be properly reviewed. Logistics need to work. Payment terms need to be understood. And the buyer and seller need to be able to execute.
These details may sound operational, but they are what turn a commodity opportunity into a real transaction.
Fertilisers, Food Security & UN SDG 2
I learned from Alice Stambuli that access to agricultural fertilisers is becoming a serious challenge in parts of Eastern Africa.
In many of these countries, agriculture is more than an industry. It is a major source of livelihood and income, with farmers producing food for local communities while also supplying agricultural commodities to domestic and international markets.
This made me look at fertiliser differently.
Farmers need land, water, seeds, technology, financing and access to markets to produce successful harvests. They also need essential plant nutrients.
Urea 46N provides a concentrated source of nitrogen, one of the key nutrients required for plant growth. When farmers have limited access to fertiliser, the impact can extend beyond individual farms. It can affect crop productivity, farmer income, agricultural supply chains and, ultimately, food security.
The connection is simple:
Fertiliser → Agriculture → Food Production → Food Security → UN SDG 2

Supporting UN Sustainable Development Goal 2
SDG 2 Zero Hunger — calls for an end to hunger, improved food security and nutrition, and the promotion of sustainable agriculture.
Fertiliser alone cannot achieve these goals. Strong food systems also depend on water, infrastructure, financing, technology, logistics and access to markets. But reliable access to essential agricultural inputs is an important part of that system.
Behind the commodity are fields, crops, farmers, families and communities.
A shipment of Urea 46N may begin as a commercial transaction, but its journey can ultimately connect international trade with agricultural productivity and food security.
At JCG, this is what makes Urea 46N more than simply a commodity.
It is part of a much bigger story — connecting resources, agriculture, trade and the food systems that communities depend on.
A Small Granule, A Much Bigger Story
A granule of Urea may be small. Its place in the global food system is anything but.
It connects natural resources with agriculture, producers with farmers, and international trade with something fundamental to every society: Food.
For me, this is what makes commodity trading so interesting.
Behind every commodity is a much bigger story — about people, economies, resources and the future.
And sometimes, understanding that bigger story begins with something as simple as a small white granule.
